SERGIO BELOTTI · CHOOSING YOUR BELT
How to choose a belt as a gift for your adult son
For studying, a first job or everyday outfits, choose a belt that respects your adult son’s own style. Focus on a useful fit rather than buying a size to grow into or imposing a dress code.

Ask which clothes the belt is for
A first work wardrobe, favourite jeans and an outfit for a formal occasion may call for different choices. Ask your son what he would wear the gift with. If belts barely feature in his wardrobe, do not choose one simply as a symbol of adulthood. A useful present meets his needs rather than replacing his taste with the giver’s expectations.
Start with a specific pair of trousers
Measure the space in the belt loops and compare it with the width in the product specifications. Then consider whether the buckle looks proportionate. A restrained 35 mm belt may work for a first pair of tailored trousers if the loops suit it; for jeans, compare it with a wider option. These are starting points rather than rules: his trousers and preferences decide.
Choose a size that fits now
An adult recipient needs a length that fits now. Measure the whole leather strap of a comfortable belt without its buckle. If no suitable belt is available, use the size finder and compare the result with the model’s specifications. Excess length does not make a gift universal. Check shortening separately rather than assuming every belt can be altered.
Offer a choice between understandable options
Compare a classic and an automatic buckle together, or two leather shades. Explain the difference in operation and let your son decide: preferences develop through use. To keep some surprise, check at least colour and width. Between two suitable models, choose the one that works with his actual clothes, rather than only looking appealing in a catalogue photograph.
Add the presentation and keep the instructions handy
The gift-box version comes with a wooden box and greeting card. The product page retains the size finder and shortening instructions, useful after fitting if the construction supports adjustment. Select the exact colour and length, then confirm the packaging and final marketplace price. Do not shorten the belt before your son has tried it with his own trousers.
